The owner said he’s somewhat surprised at how quickly his brewery has grown into both a Kingsport hot spot and a regional music venue. If one of the downtown restaurants has a band playing, Connaster will have his bands playing just after, hoping that these music lovers will make their merry way to Sleepy Owl Brewery from the downtown area.
It doesn’t matter if they’re coming to his establishment for his beer or for the music; the way he looks at it, at least they’re coming. “We’ve become known as a really good listening room,” he said. “The acoustics are good in here. We have a really nice PA system. We always planned to have music, but we’ve turned into a small music venue.”
BOURBON AND TEQUILA BARRELS OF FUN AT STUDIO BREW

The Story : It’s a truism across the world of craft beer, but you’d be hard pressed to find anyone who has more fun tinkering and honing his trade than Studio Brew’s founder, Erich Allen. The Sullivan County man and his wife, Pamela, aren’t the pair to be boxed in by settling on one style or one process of beer making. Whether it is bringing out the flavors of bourbon or tequila barrels to mix with his beer, brewmaster Erich gets the most out of his ideas and the resources he uses to make his batches of suds.
“Our twist is that we’re just so big and bold and out of the pocket,” Erich said about Studio Brew’s process, something he’s developed over time. Not arrogantly, he explains exactly how he uses what he considers to be his best brewing and creative characteristics to get to his end product. “I’ve been very gifted in my life. I’m not very book smart, and I really have a hard time reading. But I can look at something and just realize the end result. That’s the whole thing. That’s visualization of the finished results.”
This kind of modesty is typical with Erich, but his march to opening Studio Brew came through the trial and error of another line of work, though his only error might have been timing, having a business that would be affected by downturned markets and a tanking housing industry.
His work with commercial and residential audio, video and smart technology did the same thing as many others involved with the industry, giving him more time on his hands than he was used to.
Eureka! he thought, he’d make some beer. Starting with kit beer, as many do, Erich quickly decided he liked to pursue endeavors with more fervor and jumped directly into brewing with everything he had, making friends and catching ideas from his pals at the State of Franklin Homebrewers Club, who had met at Depot Street and really inspired him to be the best he could.
